I am sick
of that huge,
useless bio of a character
I will likely never use
taking up so much space
on this DA page.

So I fill up space
with equally useless
words. Because words
take up less of it
in this form,
and that
is preferable.

Gregory Gnomerson

Marital Status: Single
Birthdate: January 21, 1971
Wand Type: 11.5” Rowan, Dragon Whisker core
Years at Hogwarts: 3
Former House: Ravenclaw
Position: Muggle Studies Professor

Biography: Gregory Gnomerson was born to a Welsh-English father and a half-Dutch, half-Indonesian mother. Both of his parents were half-bloods (father the son of a pure-blood father and muggle-born mother, mother the daughter of a Dutch muggle and an Indonesian witch born in Dutch East Indies colony). Gregory was raised as a young boy on the family estate in Wales. His father was a typical father, attentive except when busy, loving towards his only son. His mother was a great mother and very much fun, except for when she wasn’t, when she got bored and disappeared for months or even years at a time; the English climate, she would say, didn’t suit her very much. Gregory was an only child, officially – his mother had several “miscarriages” after him; his father was rumored to have two illegitimate children with a muggle or muggle-born woman in a nearby town, but refused to confirm or deny the rumors when asked directly. Gregory’s nickname, thanks to his mother, became “Gori” early on in childhood. He was a strange child who liked to get into the belonging of nearby adults and take them apart, twist them into strange shapes, or otherwise render them unusable. It was clear from a fairly early age, about 4 or 5, that he was indeed a magical child..

At age 11 the boy got his letter and was promptly sorted into Ravenclaw, where he made a respectable number of friends among those boys that didn’t mind that he was a bit stranger than the rest. Gregory attended Hogwarts during that calm-between-storms interlude between the two wizard wars, the significance of which it took him a bit to really comprehend because his childhood had been a bit more sheltered than the average wizard child’s might have been. He knew his uncle had died when he was four, that adults were always very cautious, that once his father had almost hit his mother out of panic when she’d taken him out of the house without telling anyone, and so on. It was at school, though, that he really learned about the age of Voldemort and Death Eaters. His performance was above-average in classes, sometimes amazing, sometimes miserable, mostly according to his whims and how much an effort he felt like making. At NEWT level his concentration improved a good bit. After graduation, Gregory decided that what he wanted to do, was to wonder around the world.

He went first to Amsterdam, wanting to learn more about some of his mother’s culture or the like. He found the city much to his liking and got himself a job at a magical bookshop whose owner happened to speak English. He stayed there for almost three years, during which time Gori read more than he probably had in all his years in Hogwarts and also managed to get quite fluent in Dutch, which he had previously known only the slightest smattering bit of. After that he got bored again and moved to Romania for a year. After that it was Turkey, Azerbajan, Kashmir, Nepal, Tibet, Thailand and Laos. He engaged in a varied array of jobs to support himself and learned a good bit of the magic and cultures of a the places he visited. He also became increasingly interested in the differences of the muggle cultures of these places, particularly since in some areas muggles outnumbered wizards to a far greater degree than in the UK. Along the way he became a Buddhist and a bit of an ascetic hippy type – he shaved his head bald and stopped wearing shoes, among other things.

Because of his travels Gregory missed most of the things going on in Britain in recent years  - save for a duel with a duo of former Death Eaters in exile, the war missed him completely. He returned a few years ago to England due to the death of his father. He was working a bit as a tutor when he learned of an opening in Hogwarts as a Muggle studies teacher. His interest, particularly in muggle gadgets and machines, which he was quite proficient in using as well as taking apart and reassembling, lead him to apply for the position.

Blood: Half-Blood
Family Status: Average
Other:

Pets: Rock Eagle Owl Bubo bengalensis from Southern Nepal and also a Common Hoopoe bird from Kashmir.

Ethnicity is ½ Welsh-English, ¼ Dutch and ¼ Indonesian.

He is a practitioner of Zen Buddhism and advanced Yoga. He’s also vegetarian.

Almost never wears shoes, often also doesn’t wear shirt; jokes frequently about being fired ‘any day now’.

Athletic, sometimes rides brooms but usually only to perform dangerous/daredevil type stunts on them, never had the discipline at school for Quidditch.

Commitment-phobe, so his relationships rarely last longer than six months. Also doesn’t like to stay in one place too long, and even long events and ceremonies really bore him.

He is a bit of a savant with languages… speaks Dutch quite fluently, Turkish and Nepali also fluently but with a heavy/bad accents, can get by mostly in Tibetan and Thai, knows a few words in Romanian and Lao.
